impression from the part of the Alps where the video was shot

Welcome to the new Ainulindalë website,

finally, after months about months of waiting, we can all watch the first Ainulindalë video! It's been a very long and complicated process, but it was worth it - hopefully!

It all started with an idea of my long time friend Thomas Gerard. Back in December 2004 he asked me if I was interested to work on a video for Ainulindalë, a video based mainly on the terrific landscapes that were surrounding us (we lived in Grenoble at that time, at the heart of the French Alps). I thought it would be nice to have a clip, but I didn't want to shoot a video for a song from "The Lay of Leithian"... That's why I decided to write a new song which would sum up different musical elements from "The Lay Of Leithian" and add some new material... Lyrically speaking, the very begining of "The Lay of Leithian" (the short story from the Silmarillion) seemed to perfectly fit the picture... It's a part I had to reduce to the minimum on the record and I wanted to develop it a bit futher...

I divided the video into two parts, the first one dealing with Beren in the forest and the death of his father, the second one showing Beren wandering in Dorthonion and his arrival at Doriath (which is the real starting point of Tolkien's short story). Seen from this perspective, the song is a sort of prelude to "The Lay of Leithian"... Musically speaking I chose to use old material from the album for the first part (a bit rearranged of course) and new melodies for the end of the song, in order to create an atmosphere that would fit this "wandering" mood...

We shot the video on three days, on three different locations and in three different periods of the winter. We had a fantastic time and some good laugh eventhough the weather was tough...

We wanted to edit the video right after we shot it, but Thomas had no time for this and neither had I since I started the recording of my Black Metal band Vehementer Nos...

So finally, this February (almost a year later) I decided to cut it myself. It took me an entire week, working five to six hours a day, trying to recreate on screen the vision we had when we started... And there it is...

I hope you'll like it as much as we do. No means, some good friends involved, a strong will to do something beautiful and honest... that what it's all about for me...
